Baby Reindeer star admits reaction to Netflix series was ‘very overwhelming’

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com, Mau opened up about what it felt like to be catapulted into the limelight thanks to Netflix’s famous Baby Reindeer.

Speaking about the response to the series, Mau said: “It was very overwhelming to recognize that so many people were watching the series and had such a personal response. It was beautiful, it was beautiful to be able to share so many conversations. about the show, that’s kind of all you could hope for as an actor, to be a part of something.”

But could Mau have imagined the scale that the series would have had? “Absolutely not,” she admits.

“I knew whoever was supposed to see it would see it. It’s just… I mean it when I say it, I just had to be a part of it. It was enough that it had already changed my life, just to work on Baby Reindeer So everything that followed was like a blessing and an extension of what it already was for me.

Reflecting on her selection to be part of this year’s BAFTA Breakthrough program, Mau said: “It’s incredible. It feels like, you know, the Baby Reindeer chapter, in a way, is starting to unfold. finish after having experienced this incredible adventure over the last six months.

“And now to be a part of this program, it’s like I can embark on a new beginning and I’m very, very grateful for that.”

Since its release in April, Baby Reindeer has become an overnight hit of a series, telling the story of a harrowing stalking ordeal centering on Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd), a struggling comedian who becomes the victim of bullying from a woman. called Martha (Jessica Gunning) following a friendly interaction at the pub where he works.

Mau starred in the series as Donny’s girlfriend Teri, an American therapist who had lived in London for years and met Donny on a dating site, but was ultimately unimpressed with the way how he treated her.

Also discussing with RadioTimes.com about the reception to her role as Teri and how her character sought to create trans representation, Mau admitted: “I mean, I’ll be honest, I didn’t know Teri was going to be received with so much love and kissed with admiration.

“I think it speaks to the power of representing a trans woman in all her complexity and not having to be perfect, not being afraid to show the world your scars. On the other hand, seeing how it makes her makes you strong to be fearless I’m so grateful for how the character was received.
