More than 150 people were killed in the capital Port-au-Prince last week as violence continued to ravage the country.

The roads are said to be littered with charred corpses after the vigilantes turned on Barbecue’s men and sliced them up before throwing their bodies into bonfires.

Vengeful residents and police officers from the suburbs of Pétion-Ville are said to have stormed the streets to hunt down members of the tyrant’s gang.

Around 28 of them were captured and ruthlessly eliminated during the nighttime mission, local media reported.

Pétion-Ville has been at the heart of unrest since Barbecue attempted his coup d’état by launching an attempt to take power.

He has expressed his ambition to one day become president since Jovenal Moise, then president of Haiti, was assassinated by 28 gunmen while he slept.

He reignited serious fears about the safety of those responsible on Tuesday, threatening to track down any politician hiding in the capital.

The warlord posted a chilling message on social media saying his men planned to go door-to-door at every hotel.

He wrote: “If we can’t take the hotel, if I can’t find the hotel owner, then the hotel employees can pay.”

He also demanded the resignation of the entire ruling Presidential Transitional Council.

Haiti’s gang warlord Barbecue tells the capital to “get ready”, fearing his army of thugs will try to overthrow the government today.

It is made up of nine people who were chosen to govern Haiti in the absence of a president.

Following the public revenge attack on the gang, the dozens of remaining members began causing even more damage as the week dragged on.

Since then, more than 120 people have died, more than half of them from “exchanges of fire between gang members and police,” according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Another 92 people were seriously injured, the UN added.

Haitian armed groups now reportedly control at least 80 percent of Port-au-Prince and appear determined to maintain control of the capital.

Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, today issued a devastating statement saying: “The nearly four million residents of Port-au-Prince are being held virtually hostage as gangs now control all major roads entering and exiting the capital.

“The latest upsurge of violence in the Haitian capital portends the worst to come.

“Gang violence must end quickly. Haiti must not be allowed to slide further into chaos. »

For more than two years, warring factions have torn Port-au-Prince apart, turning every day into a struggle for survival.

Dire warnings about the militia’s capabilities were issued earlier this month after an airport attack.

Moving planes were hit by gunfire and international airlines suspended all flights to the city.

A flight attendant was injured when gangs smashed two planes.

Elsewhere in Haiti, a number of wealthy neighborhoods were invaded by gangs who burned down homes. houses and leave families torn apart.

Due to escalating gang violence, so-called self-defense brigades have taken justice into their own hands.

A UN report says at least 528 cases of lynching have been reported in 2023 and hundreds more so far in 2024.

In February, armed groups even attacked a prison, freeing more than 5,000 detainees.

Since then, thugs have set fire to government buildings and torched police stations.

As thousands of people have been massacred, assaulted, abused and seriously threatened, unprecedented levels of crime continue to overwhelm the country.

The violence has exacerbated an already grim humanitarian situation, with warnings of famine, malnutrition and the collapse of basic services.

Who is Barbecue?

Port-au-Prince in HAITI is currently in the hands of the feared Jimmy “Barbecue”

Barbecue – who reportedly earned his nickname for setting his victims on fire – considers himself a “revolutionary”, a self-described “man of the people”.

His methods include killing, maiming, and extorting anyone unlucky enough to stumble upon his territory – turning each day into a constant battle for the inhabitants’ survival.

The fired police officer turned warlord took to the streets with renewed vengeance and a plan to overthrow the government.

He is currently sanctioned by the United Kingdom and its allies for “engaging in acts threatening the peace, security and stability of Haiti.”

And its influence is growing rapidly as the country descends into further unrest sparked by the 2021 assassination of Prime Minister Jovenal Moïse.

Since then, a security vacuum has been created and Barbecue has greedily exploited it, seizing territory and expanding its coalition with other gangs to continue the war.

The G9 has also been responsible for repeatedly depriving Haiti of its much-needed fuel supply by holding its main oil terminal hostage.

In a savage show of force, Barbecue repeatedly paralyzed the country by preventing the distribution of food, water and life-saving medicines, plunging it into a deeper humanitarian crisis.

Barbecue’s criminal career dates back to his days as a police officer, InSight Crime reports.

He took part in an anti-gang operation in 2017, which led to the extrajudicial execution of nine civilians.

In 2018, he led a group of seven gangs in a massacre in La Saline, the worst massacre Haiti has seen in more than a decade.

Barbecue was later fired by police and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

In 2019, he took part in a four-day attack in the Bel-Air neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, killing at least 24 people.
