Priority for snow removal following the first significant snowfall of the season – DiscoverMooseJaw.com

With a full week of snowfall predicted for Moose Jaw, it’s time to think about the city’s winter maintenance policy when it comes to street snow removal.

Municipal teams are beginning their work to clear priority routes and sidewalks around municipal facilities.

It should be noted that snow removal operations begin when the snow accumulation reaches an accumulation of five centimeters, snow removal being carried out according to the order of priority indicated below. If accumulation is constant, as is the case with continuous or sequential snowstorms, snow removal work may repeat or continue at the highest priority until moving to the next priority level.

The City has four priorities and two categories when it comes to streets and snow removal:

Priority 1: Emergency service routes and facilities

Priority 1 roads are plowed and sanded to remove ice 24 hours after a storm. The snow will be removed when the windrows are more than one meter high. Windrows on medians or in the center of the road will be removed within a 15 meter radius of any intersection before the end of the municipal team’s shift. Windrows in parking areas will also be removed before the end of the shift. If the snow cannot be removed, no more than 50 percent of the parking spaces should be blocked.

Priority 2: Bus lines

These roads will be plowed and sanded 48 hours after a storm. The windrows will not exceed half a meter on the sidewalk and a parking space will be maintained in front of private residents.

Priority 3: Collector roads and areas with potential drainage problems

Priority 3 roads are plowed and sanded 72 hours after a storm. Windrows will also not extend more than half a meter onto sidewalks and a park stand will be maintained in front of private residents.

Priority 4: Local collector roads

The last to be plowed is Priority 4. It will be plowed 96 hours after a storm. Once again, the windrows will not extend half a meter onto the sidewalk and a parking stand will be maintained in front of individuals.

Category 1: All other roads and footbridges

These will remain packaged. Leveling and snow removal are reviewed when ruts exceed 10 centimeters. Typically, these roads are only cleared in the spring to avoid drainage problems.

Category 2: City-owned parking lots

Parking lots are cleared when the land is compromised and as needed.

In all residential properties, windrows blocking driveways with a height of 20 centimeters or less must be cleared by the owner. Windrows over 20 centimeters are the City’s responsibility to clear them.
