The Tripura BJP almost doubled its membership in the just-concluded campaign, compared to 2019, and registered 11.91 lakh members, a party leader said on Saturday.

BJP leader Bhagaban Chandra Das, who is in charge of the membership drive in Tripura state, said that out of the total over 11.91 lakh BJP members, 9.41 lakh people are joining. are registered online while 2.50 lakh have registered through offline mode.

He said that during the previous membership drive in 2019, 6.50 people in Tripura registered their membership.

“Thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s programmes, projects and welfare measures, people from all walks of life have spontaneously registered themselves,” Das, a former minister, told the media.

He said tribals, scheduled castes, women, farmers, youth, workers and service holders have become the party’s members in large numbers.

Das, currently a BJP MP, said after registration of members, elections in 3,349 party booths across Tripura had begun. Once the organizational elections are over, elections for all 60 ‘Mandals’ will be held, then district level elections and finally state level elections will be held, he said.

Former Lok Sabha member and Tripura in-charge of the BJP, Rajdeep Roy, earlier said that the BJP had launched a membership registration drive in Tripura on September 3, setting a target of enrolling 12 lakh members in the state.

Total membership includes new and renewed members.

Roy, who is also the vice-president of the Assam unit of the BJP, observed that the recruitment of such a large number is a great achievement of the party organizations in the state under the leadership of Chief Minister Manik Saha and the party president Rajib Bhattacharjee.

He said Tripura’s name would be equated with big states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Assam in achieving membership targets set by the party’s central leadership.

Once the membership drive is completed, active members will be selected to participate in organizational elections, Roy said.

Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha earlier said that the spontaneous response of the people during the membership drive would further strengthen the foundations of the BJP in the state.

Saha, former BJP president, while participating in the membership drive in Bardowali Mandal here, people’s spontaneous response to joining the party shows how much they love the party.
