Dog treats recalled due to possible salmonella risk: see affected states


Even if a dog does not show symptoms of salmonella, it can still shed it in its stool or saliva and transmit the bacteria to humans and other pets.

Dog treats sold in 19 states by two companies are being recalled due to potential salmonella contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Carolina Prime Pet, Inc., Lenoir, North Carolina, has initiated a recall of 400 16-ounce bags of “Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips” treats for dogs, the FDA announced Nov. 23.

As of the date of the recall, no illnesses had been reported, the federal agency said.

The product comes in a 16-ounce purple and black bag marked on the back with lot number 20051324L2. Its expiration date is November 13, 2025.

Where were Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips sold?

The treats were available for purchase through the Company’s online retail platform at www.hollywoodfeed.com and also sold at retailers in the following states:

What is salmonella?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and fatal infections in children, older adults, pregnant women and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated product.

Pet food can sometimes be the cause of a Salmonella infection. If people handle contaminated pet food or a contaminated utensil and then touch their mouth, they may accidentally ingest the bacteria.

The infection is not common in dogs and cats, but they can carry the bacteria.

What are the signs of salmonellosis in dogs and cats?

According to the FDA, signs of salmonellosis in dogs and cats include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea (some with blood in it)
  • Decreased activity levels
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite

Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips Also Recalled

A day earlier, the FDA announced that Gaines Pet Treats LLC, of ​​Birmingham, Alabama, was voluntarily recalling 204 5-ounce bags of “Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips” treats for the same reason.

The product comes in a 5-ounce bag with lot number 20061124. Its expiration date is December 11, 2025.

Where were Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips sold?

The recalled “Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips” were also distributed through online and pet retailers in the following states:

As of Nov. 22, no illnesses in pets have been reported, according to the FDA.
