Former Kotoko player Atta Kusi shares how playing football in Ghana turned him into a beggar

Former Asante Kotoko player, Atta Kusi, has expressed deep regret for earning very little throughout his football career in Ghana.

He revealed that he regretted not pursuing a different career or continuing his education because his football talent only reduced him to a beggar.

“Honestly, I regret playing football. It pains me that I haven’t learned a trade or focused on education. If that were the case, I would earn a better salary than I received playing football in this country,” Kusi explained.

He admitted to feeling humiliated every time he has to rely on friends for financial support, despite having played for renowned clubs like Asante Kotoko and Ashanti Gold.

“Whenever I reflect on my career, playing for big clubs like Kotoko, Ashanti Gold and Gold Stars, I feel a deep sense of pity. It is humiliating to have to beg for pocket money with my friends, who are mechanics and electricians,” he confessed, as quoted by SportWorldGhana.

Kusi urged young Ghanaian footballers to seek opportunities abroad as the local system does not guarantee a successful career.

“I would advise all future players to work hard and look for opportunities outside the country. It’s extremely difficult to build a football career here. Additionally, the lack of adequate player insurance means that a single injury could end your career prematurely,” Kusi added.

Currently a free agent, Atta Kusi is without a club after his contract with Heart of Lions expired at the end of the 2023/2024 season.

Throughout his career, he played for clubs such as Asante Kotoko, King Faisal, Ashanti Gold and Bibiani Gold Stars.
