Rudy Giuliani’s lawyers drop 8 million defamation case over ‘fundamental disagreement’ with former New York mayor

Former Mayor of New York City Rudy Giulianilawyers, Kenneth Caruso And David Labkowskidropped his $148 million defamation case.

On December 15, 2023, a Washington, D.C., jury ordered Giuliani pay $148 million to two Georgia election officials for false and defamatory allegations he made about them.

In 2020, Giuliani publicly stated that Ruby Freeman And Wandrea “Shaye” Moussetwo election workers involved in counting ballots in Fulton County, Georgia, participated in voter fraud.

On November 13, Caruso, Giuliani’s lead attorney, and Labkowski, his attorney, filed a largely redacted motion in a New York federal court, stating several reasons for their withdrawal.

“A lawyer may withdraw from representing a client when: . . . (4) the customer insists

taking an action with which the lawyer fundamentally disagrees; . . . (6)

the customer insists on presenting a claim or defense which is not guaranteed under

existing law and cannot be supported by a good faith argument in favor of an extension,

modification or reversal of existing law; (Or) . . . (7) the customer does not cooperate

in the performance or makes the performance unreasonably difficult

so that the lawyer can effectively carry out his work,” the lawyers wrote in the filing.

Giuliani spokesperson Ted Goodman offered a statement in response to media coverage of these court documents.

“Mayor Giuliani was not informed by Mr. Caruso of this action,” Goodman noted in his statement. “Mr. Caruso would surely speak to the mayor or, at the very least, inform him of such a decision.”

On October 22, U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman in Manhattan, it was decided that Giuliani should turn over his sports memorabilia and luxury items to Georgia election officials to help him settle his debt to them.
