Orlando seeks feedback on Pulse memorial as design decision nears

The Orlando committee planning the design of a memorial at the site of the Pulse nightclub massacre is seeking public comment.

The permanent memorial will honor the victims, survivors and others affected by the June 12, 2016 mass shooting that claimed the lives of 49 people.

In extensive meetings last month, the Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee, including family members of those killed, considered three design options and has grappled with sensitive issues such as whether and how to preserve parts of the former LGBTQIA+ nightclub.

City officials say the drawings also seek to recognize each victim individually; create a safe and welcoming space; provide shade and protection from bad weather; and include a tribute to survivors, according to a press release.

Before the next meeting on Dec. 12, consulting architects from Baker Barrios Architects and Catalyst Design Group will refine the concept plan based on committee feedback. The city is asking members of the public, especially those affected by the tragedy, to provide feedback.

And now is the time to do it, because the concept plan could go before the city council as early as January.

Orlando budgeted $7.5 million for design and construction.

The city has a web page for its Memorial Engagement Process. Pages include opportunity view and comment on design options.

Anyone wishing to consult the committee’s work can also consult previous meetings online.
