“As you know, I had resigned from my post as GNCTD Minister on November 17. On the same day, I had also resigned from my post as a senior member of the Aam Aadmi Party. Most of my reasons for this decision were shared in the letter…that I had sent to Shri Arvind Kejriwal ji…the main reason was the fact that AAP had started to deviate from its moral values and ethical, thus making it difficult for me to continue. I hereby tender my resignation from the Delhi Legislative Assembly…the same may be accepted with immediate effect,” Gahlot said in the letter, a copy of which HT has accessed.

President Goel said he would accept Gahlot’s resignation.

Gahlot is the sitting MLA from Najafgarh Assembly constituency, which he has represented since 2015 as an AAP MLA. However, following his resignation, he will not be able to attend the special session of the Delhi assembly starting Friday.

With the Najafgarh Assembly seat now vacant, fresh elections are usually held after a notification is issued. But as the term of the current assembly is due to end on February 23 – less than six months from now – no polls will be held for the seat.
