“Pay!” » – Shrewsbury college teachers call for pay rise to match academies

Striking teachers from Shrewsbury College braved the cold outside the London Road and English Bridge campuses to take part in a national day of protest.

They held up signs saying: “Pay. Sixth Form Colleges Demand Justice! »

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson gave primary and secondary school teachers an above-inflation pay deal in September, as recommended by the Pay Review Body – with £1.2 billion additional sterling provided by the government to help fund the increase.

However, although sixth form university colleges were included in the government’s guaranteed funding for the 5.5% pay rise, this was not the case for non-university institutes.

More than 2,000 members working in non-university sixth form colleges across England are calling on the Government to ensure they receive pay that is above inflation and in line with the rest of the profession.

Teachers were protesting outside Shrewsbury College’s London Road campus.

National Education Union representative John Boken said the strike had been met with a positive reception from the public, but said the college had blocked a meeting to hold the proceedings there this week.
