The developer behind plans to transform the site of the former Dundee nightclub into student accommodation is asking for more time to begin work on the site.

Newtide Investments Limited was granted planning permission in December last year to carry out an eight-storey development where the former Liquid building currently stands on South Ward Road.

Under the plans, the former nightclub will be demolished and a purpose-built 215-bed student accommodation block will be built in its place.

A cinema room, gym, study spaces and bicycle storage will also be included.

As part of the approval, Dundee City Council stipulated that work should begin within 18 months.

It was hoped that work would begin by summer this year, with the aim of students being able to live in the accommodation by 2026.

However, a new request for an extension has been filed.

A supporting statement states that the decision was due to a “considerable period of market and construction instability”.

The developer is requesting an additional 18 months to begin work.
