The usual routine is that he steps up to a podium and the various reporters present take turns asking him questions, a variety of queries that range from particular plays within the game, to the performance of particular players, or general observations about how the game fits into the game’s narrative of the season.

Things like that.

But on Thursday, after his team put up a discouraging effort in a 5-2 loss to the New York Islanders, Tocchet took the initiative and shared some comments — as well as an apology to the team’s fans — before to answer questions.

“Don’t ask about individual players today, okay? No offense,” he began.

“I apologize to the fans. We don’t play well enough at home. It’s on me. The guys played light tonight. I thought we were ready to go; we weren’t. It’s on me. I have to get this team to play harder in the first half. Squirts here and there, but not enough from many guys. So I have to go train tomorrow and go straight back to the drawing board.

Later, at the end of a response to a question about how the Islanders had defended the Canucks’ efforts to build energy on the run, he apologized again.

“It’s a frustrating situation because the fans are paying, what is that? Two, three, four five hundred dollars? And we throw duds at them. So I apologize once again to the fans. We need to correct this,” he added.
