“I put Steph off” – Draymond Green on what his former teammate did to Steph to motivate him for his reunion

“I put Steph off” – Draymond Green on what his former teammate did to Steph to motivate him for his reunion

The Splash brothers reunited this week – but on opposite teams.

Klay Thompson was back in the Bay – and given a hero’s welcome with a moving tribute to ‘Captain Klay’, but it was Steph Curry who had the final touch.

Speaking on the latest episode of his own podcast, the Draymond Green Show, the power forward revealed what Thompson did to Curry.

The two-time MVP went for 37 points, including the game-winner against the Dallas Mavericks.

“So I pushed Steph away, because Steph was supposed to speak before the game,” Green said.

“He said I called Raymond and I told him I wasn’t talking, I just needed to focus on the game so I wasn’t talking and I told Klay about it.

“I tried to check with Klay about something else and Klay ghosted him. So he got laid and there we go! Here we go! That’s why he was like that.”

It seemed like Curry couldn’t contain himself when he took over to score the final twelve points of the game as he ran to the other end of the court and held his jersey up to the camera, yelling “You better stay here.”

Green revealed that he deliberately decided to ignore questions about Thompson and wanted Curry to do the same.

“So finally (Tuesday) morning, I text Steph and I send her a message like, ‘Hey, listen here, big dog, I need you locked up,'” Green said.

“Whatever you need to do, if it’s to watch this tribute video, I said I’m going to do the same.”

It was an emotional evening for the Warriors and Thompson, with the home team gifting the entire arena with a captain’s hat, an item synonymous with their former player, and a heartfelt tribute video was shown before the game.

Thompson and Curry together became the Splash Brothers, a duo that would go on to great success, winning four championships and forming one of the NBA’s greatest dynasties.

The American left the Warriors after a poor 2023-24 season and signed a 3-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks who reached the NBA Finals.

Curry continued to put the brakes on Thompson’s comeback by scoring the game-winning third dagger with 30 seconds left — and hitting his trademark “Night, Night.”

The 2022 Finals MVP finished with 37 points while four-time NBA champion Thompson recorded 22 in what was a thrilling reunion between the two that featured some ultra-competitive moments.

“Klay Thompson played very well. Amazing. And they lost. That’s what we needed this night for,” Green also said.

Tuesday’s game was an NBA Cup opener for both teams, while it was the Thompson-less Warriors who started better.

Boasting a 9-2 record and sitting in second place in the Western Conference, they are doing just fine without their former star brother.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks haven’t hit the form that saw them crowned Western Conference champions last season – a 5-6 record isn’t what they expected to start the year.

Thompson will have the opportunity to get revenge when he welcomes Curry to his new home in Dallas on February 12 at the American Airlines Center.

So it seems Klay has learned a new lesson about his 13-year-old teammate, don’t leave him hanging.
