Throwback: When Aamir Khan reflects on his shocking decision to quit films and his family’s response | Hindi Cinema News

Aamir Khan is one of the most famous actors and filmmakers in Bollywood. He has always been dedicated to his work and his career spans more than three decades. Aamir has left an indelible mark on the film industry with his brilliant work and various roles. However, three years ago, Aamir announced that he had decided to quit acting. This revelation surprised both his family and fans, and Aamir opened up about it during an old interview on Rhea Chakraborty’s podcast series.

Aamir said he wanted to quit acting due to a deep desire to fully concentrate on his family, but his family’s response was far from what he expected. He said in Hindi: “When I told them three years ago that I was quitting films, their reaction was: ‘Dad, how are you going to quit films?’ You’ve been involved like crazy for 30 years. You must be emotional right now and you won’t be able to do it,” Aamir recalls. His family, while supportive, did not believe he could give up a career that had defined him for so long. They simply nodded, but there was a clear sense of disbelief.
Aamir then shared how he broke the news to his production team, which included his ex-wife, Kiran Rao. “I told them I don’t need this company anymore because I’m not going to make films,” he explained. Aamir’s decision to quit acting left his entire professional circle shocked and confused. Kiran was particularly distressed. “You are leaving us all,” she said, visibly in tears. Aamir tried to calm her down by telling her that he was stopping films and would always be there for his family. However, Kiran’s words were much deeper. “If you leave cinema, you are a child of cinema… you are made for cinema, and if you leave it, you abandon life and the world. In fact, we too are part of this world, so you are leaving us too.

At the time, Aamir didn’t fully understand her emotional reaction, but in retrospect he realized she was right. Even though Aamir had hoped to spend more time with his loved ones, his bond with cinema was something he couldn’t easily break. Since then, Aamir has been involved in various projects, including the co-production of Kiran’s critically acclaimed film ‘Laapataa Ladies’. He is also currently working on “Sitaare Zameen Par”, a project focused on Down syndrome.
