Residents’ Favorite Happy Meal

Residents’ Favorite Happy Meal

The Randfontein Herald took to the streets to ask some residents what their favorite Christmas foods are.

Mchayo ‘Big Man’ Thafeni.

Mchayo “Big Man” Thafeni said his favorite recipe is Mtshumbula, a Shangani dish. Mchayo explained that the dish consists of vegetable roots which can be eaten as is or crushed into grains to be consumed as porridge. A complementary side dish such as red meat or fish can also be added to enrich the recipe.

Phinias Ndoga.

Phinias Ndoga has a special chicken stew recipe that he loves to cook for his family at Christmas. He explained that he usually boiled tomatoes and onions until they turned into a velvety substance. Then he adds his special spice blend to the soup. It is traditional for him and his family to buy a live chicken at the market.

After slaughtering the chicken, Phinias finally boiled the meat in a pot with the tomato and onion mixture. He added that he usually tastes his food before putting it on the table to make sure it’s perfect.

Johan Marais said he and his family enjoyed a typical braai with different salads. What makes the meal most special is that the whole family comes together to share a feast, says Johan.
