A Florida grandfather died after an alleged altercation over music with his neighbor on Thanksgiving, authorities said.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Hureleyon McLean was shot and killed in Lauderdale Lakes on Thursday, Nov. 28, and his neighbor was arrested by police.

According to the statement, officers arrived on scene around 3:30 p.m. local time when they found McLean, 71, “suffering from a gunshot wound.” He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said their initial investigation revealed that McLean was shot during an “altercation” with his neighbor – who authorities did not identify.

The neighbor involved in the incident “cooperated with detectives” and claimed in an interview that he shot his neighbor in “self-defense,” police said.

The incident is currently under investigation by detectives from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit.

Once the investigation is complete, police said “the case will be presented to the Broward County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.”

Hureleyon’s wife, Rose McLean, told WSVN-TV, WPLG-TV and The New York Post that she and her husband were celebrating Thanksgiving with family and friends when the incident occurred. She said their neighbor, who lived in an apartment one floor below theirs, approached them to complain that their music was too loud.

“He came to ring the doorbell and leave a message,” Rose told WSVN-TV, adding that her husband then went downstairs to speak with the neighbor, before saying he heard a gunshot.

“He was just standing there looking at me with his gun in his hand,” Rose told the outlet. “And I go up to him and I say to him, ‘Why did you shoot my husband? Why?’ And he told me that if I didn’t shut my mouth, he would shoot me too.”

Rose said Hureleyon, a father of two adult sons and a grandfather, worked as a bus driver for a private company.

“Wherever he is, I am always with him. We are like a team together. For him to be taken away like that, believe me, it’s very hard,” Rose told WSVN-TV and Job.
