An elderly man, who claims to have been without a working television for ten weeks, says he is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Joseph Lafferty, 78, from Walton, was forced to go to the pub just to watch TV after the aerial in his building “broke”.

Joseph, who lives in Heathergreen Court, says all 18 apartments in the building were left without a working television after the antenna at the top of the complex stopped receiving a signal in September this year. He says the problem was reported to Your Housing Group, which owns the building, but nothing was done to resolve it.

Your housing group has apologized to its residents who were affected by the issue at Heathergreen Court. It says the problem arose after recent work was completed on the property’s roof, which affected some residents with problems with their television signal.

The 78-year-old, who lives alone and uses television for companionship, said: “I haven’t had a television for ten weeks and this has been reported to the manager. There are 18 apartments in this building and none of our televisions work.

“I have a modern TV and nothing is working, we just want it fixed. I have one of these indoor antennas but it doesn’t work. The radio also stopped working, so I had to sit there (pointing to his bed) and read.

Joseph, who has lived at Heathergreen Court for 14 years, told the ECHO his current situation was causing him a “nervous breakdown”. “It hasn’t been pleasant for me, I live alone, it’s not good.

“I have to go to the pub to watch TV, it’s not good. I’m home alone and I feel lonely without the TV. It’s not nice to stay here without television, without anything. I’m on the verge of a nervous breakdown, it’s been like this for ten weeks, it’s terrible.

A spokesperson for Your Housing Group said: “At Your Housing Group we pride ourselves on providing our residents with a place to call home and we are sorry that there is an issue affecting those living at Heathergreen Court. Unfortunately, following the completion of recent works to the property’s attic space, some of our residents have been affected by problems with their television signal.

“Our inspectors have been on site and upgrade work has been approved to start on the property before the end of November. We also contacted the seven affected customers and offered them a temporary solution. We will continue to support all residents of the property until the issue is resolved.
