Tragic accident in Namakkal: a couple and a neighbor killed by a van | Coimbatore News

Namakkal: Three people, including two women, died after being hit by an Omni van early Sunday morning. The incident happened while they were taking a morning walk.
The deceased were identified as K Malaiannan, 70, his wife Nirmala, 55, and their neighbor S Sellammal, 65, all residents of Rasipalayam near Mohanur. Police said they were on a morning walk when the accident happened.
On Sunday around 5 am, they were hit by a van while walking along the Mohanur-Namakkal National Highway. “They died of serious injuries on the spot,” said a police officer from Mohanur police station. The driver of the van, identified as P Manikandan, 30, was also injured.
Police took the injured driver to a private hospital in Namakkal town for treatment and shifted the bodies to Namakkal Government Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the accident was caused by poor visibility caused by fog. “The driver of the van could not see the three because of the fog,” the officer added.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee spokesperson Dr PV Senthil appealed to the state government to compensate the families of the deceased. He also urged pedestrians to stay indoors until visibility improves or at least until after sunrise to avoid similar incidents.
A complaint has been filed against the driver and further investigations are underway.
