When does Trump take office? What to Know About Inauguration Day 2025

President-elect Donald Trump will soon begin his second term after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

According to USA TODAY, Trump has already named most of his cabinet nominees and several other high-level White House positions since his victory in November. Among his appointments is Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate and Cincinnati native, whom Trump tapped to help lead the new Department of Government Effectiveness, or DOGE, along with Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk.

During this period, he also replaced Matt Gaetz with a new attorney general pick after Gaetz dropped out following an ongoing controversy over past sexual misconduct investigations.

Trump also announced plans on day one, including imposing tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China.

But when will Trump and future Vice President JD Vance take the oath of office? Let’s take a look.

When is inauguration day?

The inauguration ceremony will take place on Monday January 20, 2025.

Where is the inauguration?

The inauguration ceremony takes place at the United States Capitol in Washington, DC.

What is the presidential oath?

On Inauguration Day, the vice president-elect takes the oath of office first and repeats the same oath of office recited by senators, representatives and other federal employees. The following oath has been in use since 1884:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to him; that I assume this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or intention of evasion; and that I will properly and faithfully discharge the duties of the office into which I am about to enter: So help me, God. »

Then, around noon, the president-elect recites another oath consistent with Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution.

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully serve as President of the United States and to the best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

What happens on inauguration day?

The inauguration is planned by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. Events include the swearing-in, inaugural address and a troop review.

Previous artists and speakers have included Beyoncé, Garth Brooks, Lady Gaga and Amanda Gorman. There are other events before and after the inauguration, including the inaugural parade and inaugural balls, USA TODAY reports.
