A recipe for disaster: Deep-frying a turkey costs the family their $4 million mansion

Thanksgiving got too fiery for a Connecticut family when frying a turkey burned down their four million dollar mansion. Turkey is a staple of the Thanksgiving meal and almost every family in the United States eats it on their table on this occasion. A family in the town of Weston also had similar plans, but their recipe was doomed to disaster.

A cooking episode in the garage caused the massive fire which completely destroyed the house, firefighters said in a press release. The family was trying to fry the turkey in a fryer set up in the garage when flames engulfed the entire area. The fire quickly spread to the living room as well.

“It was determined that this fire was caused by a turkey fryer inside the garage. A stark reminder of all the dangers of frying turkeys,” firefighters said.

The Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to a fire via an automatic fire alarm just before 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 28.

In a Facebook post, firefighters said the alarm was quickly followed by a call. By the time they reached the house, the fire had engulfed the entire garage and the flames had spread further inside.

The area outside the garage became so hot that the plastic on cars parked in the driveway also began to melt from the extreme heat. The fire spread extremely quickly, covering a third of the house and garage when firefighters arrived.

They fought the fire for 16 hours before it was completely extinguished. However, the damage had already been done as the house had become uninhabitable. The damage was estimated at $4 million.

Due to the festivities, there were nearly 20 people in the house at the time. Fortunately, everyone escaped unscathed.
