Extension of the mandate of the commission of inquiry into enforced disappearances

DHAKA, December 4, 2024 (BSS) – The government has extended the mandate of the Commission of Inquiry into Enforced Disappearances by three months from December 15.

The Cabinet Division published a gazette notice in this regard on December 3, stating that the government had extended the mandate of the commission in accordance with section three of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1956 (Act No. VI of 1956).

On September 15, the government formed a five-member commission headed by Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury to investigate persons forcibly disappeared by law enforcement agencies between January 1, 2010 and August 5, 2024.

The members of the commission are Justice Farid Ahmed Shibli, human rights activist Nur Khan, BRAC University lecturer Nabila Idris and human rights activist Sazzad Hossain.

The commission has already noted the involvement of the DGFI, RAB, DB, CTTC, CID and the General Police in the enforced disappearances and is currently questioning the security personnel concerned in this regard.
