Who will get which portfolios in the new Maharashtra government? – First message

Maharashtra is set to get its new chief minister today (December 5) as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Devendra Fadnavis takes oath for the third time. His inauguration ceremony will take place in the evening in a grand ceremony at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers and state chief ministers will mark their presence at the event. Along with Fadnavis, two deputy CMs are also expected to take oath.

Let’s take a closer look.

Eknath Shinde can take oath

Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde has reportedly agreed to take oath as Maharashtra deputy CM in the new Mahayuti government.

This is a major change from his earlier stance that he was reluctant to work under Fadnavis after serving as CM for two years.

According to a Times of India (TOI) According to a report, Fadnavis, designated CM, visited Varsha, the official residence of the Maharashtra Chief Minister, on Wednesday (December 4) to convince the Shiv Sena chief to join the government as deputy CM. Sources told the newspaper that Shinde had agreed to take the oath as the portfolio distribution would be “fair”.

Wednesday’s meeting between the two leaders, the second day in a row, lasted more than 30 minutes. The power-sharing formula was also discussed during the meeting.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar has already confirmed that he will take oath as deputy CM.

On Wednesday, Shinde backed Fadnavis as the new CM of Maharashtra.

“We have demanded the formation of the government, the swearing-in will take place on Thursday. Two and a half years ago, Devendra Fadnavis said I should become CM; today I support him for the same. We will extend our full support to the decision taken by Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah,” he told the media.

Who will get what?

Shinde wants to get the real estate portfolio, which the BJP does not want to part with.

Sources said News18 that discussions between the three Mahayuti partners – BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP – on portfolio allocation are over.

The BJP has shortlisted candidates for the Cabinet, while its alliance partners are yet to give their respective list of ministers.

According to a India today report, the BJP could retain around 22 ministries, including key departments like home and revenue. The party is also likely to retain the posts of Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly and Chairman of the Legislative Council.
