Man charged after holding phone in both hands while driving past Edinburgh crash

A man has been charged by police after allegedly holding a mobile phone in both hands while driving past a crash in Edinburgh.

Dalkeith Road Police officers said a man was found after overtaking a serious collision on the Edinburgh City Bypass, near Dreghorn Junction, on Friday, November 29.

The man, who was driving on the opposite road, allegedly passed police officers holding the phone in both hands, without any control over the direction of the vehicle.

He has been charged with traffic offenses and will be reported to the fiscal prosecutor.

A Highway Police statement said: “On Friday November 29, officers from Dalkeith Road Police were present at a serious road traffic collision near Dreghorn Junction on the Edinburgh City Bypass, working alongside of the Scottish Ambulance Service and Bear.

“During this time, an individual traveling on the opposite road encountered police officers holding a mobile phone in both hands and having no control over the direction of the vehicle.

“Officers have since traced the individual who has been charged with road traffic offenses and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”

“This behavior puts other road users at risk and will be dealt with rigorously.

“Please drive safely and wait until you have stopped driving to check and use your phone.”
