Aldi reveals exact date it will cut the price of Christmas vegetables to just 15p a bag as price war begins

ALDI has revealed it is slashing the price of its Christmas vegetables to just 15p as a price war begins.

The supermarket giant is lowering the prices of six holiday essentials so shoppers can stock up more cheaply.

The German discounter will lower prices on two-kilo bags of white potatoes, one-kilo bags of carrots and 500 g of parsnips on December 19.

Red and white cabbages, 500g bags of Brussels sprouts and broccoli will also be reduced to 15p on the same date.

But buyers won’t have long to instant cheap vegetables because the offer is only valid until December 24 and while stocks last.

The return of Aldi’s ‘Super Six’ Christmas deal comes just a day after Sainsbury’s announced it would reduce vegetables to the same price over the festive period.

The supermarket confirmed yesterday that it would be dropping its prices between December 18 and Christmas Eve for Nectar Card customers.

This includes Brussels sprouts, parsnips, carrots and potatoes.

It is common for retailers to significantly reduce the price of Christmas dinner vegetables during the festive period.

A number have offered reduced prices in 2023, including Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Lidl.

Keep in mind that you may also be able to get cheap vegetables through yellow sticker bargains at your local supermarket.

Supermarkets add these stickers to items reaching the end of their sell-by or sell-by date and you can benefit from significant discounts.

Aldi, the cheapest supermarket in the UK

New research from Which? revealed that Aldi was the cheapest supermarket to do your shopping in November.

The consumer website compared the retailer’s prices to other supermarkets on a basket of 55 items.

The average basket of 55 products at the retailer cost £97.89 in November.

Rival bargain chain Lidl was close behind, costing just 38p more for shoppers signed up to the Lidl Plus loyalty app and 45p for those not on the rewards scheme.

The same basket of 55 products at Tesco, without Clubcard, would have cost you £108.45 or £105.61 with one.

At Sainsbury’s you can expect to pay £112.06 if you didn’t have a Nectar card or £106.71 if you do.

Chic grocer Waitrose was found to be the most expensive with a price of £123.32 for a 55-item store.

It is worth remembering that research carried out by Which? was based on prices of 55 products in November only.

This means that this is just a snapshot of what you might pay at different times of the year.

Prices change frequently, sometimes daily, and you’ll find items offered in one chain one week and then another the next.

But if you’re planning to do your Christmas shopping on a budget, you might want to consider these prices.

Aldi is the cheapest, but the store doesn’t always have as much variety or branded products as larger grocery stores such as Tesco or Sainsbury’s.

You also can’t place orders online, meaning you’ll have to do your Christmas shopping in store.

How to Save Money on Christmas Shopping

Consumer journalist Sam Walker reveals how you can save money on your Christmas shopping.

Limit the number of gifts – Buying gifts for all your family and friends can cost a bomb.

Instead, why not organize a Secret Santa between your loved ones so you don’t have to buy multiple gifts.

Plan ahead – if you have the stamina and the budget, it is worth buying your Christmas presents for the following year during the January sales.

Be sure to shop around for the best deals using price comparison sites so you don’t pay more than you should.

Buy during the Boxing Day sales – Some retailers are starting their main Christmas sales early so you can score a bargain before December 25.

Shipping may cost you a little more, but it can be worth it if the savings are decent.

Buy via outlet stores – you can save a lot of money by shopping through outlet stores like Amazon Warehouse or Office Offcuts.

They sell returned or slightly damaged products at a discounted rate, but any wear and tear is usually minor.
