Live updates on Syria’s civil war: Syrian state media deny Damascus under attack as rebels advance

Syrian state media said allegations of explosions at the General Staff headquarters in Damascus were “lies” that were shared to sow panic among civilians as opposition fighters advanced towards a third city. Rebels, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) insurgent group, are advancing on the country’s third-largest city, Hom, a day after fighters took control of Hama, Syria’s fourth-largest city. Clashes were reported in central Al-Suwayda, with local reports indicating that the headquarters of the Directorate of Military Intelligence was surrounded. HTS, which was at the forefront of the assault, vowed to march south toward Homs and ultimately Damascus, President Bashar al-Assad’s seat of power.
