Rehan Jayawickreme to quit politics after election defeat – News 24

Colombo, November 16 (Daily Mirror) – Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Weligama Convener Rehan Jayawickreme has said he will retire from active politics and resign as SJB Weligama Convener.

He said in a post on X that it had been an incredibly difficult journey, especially in the face of back-to-back election defeats.

“I will be handing over my letter of resignation as convener of SJB Weligama to our party leader, Sajith Premadasa. After careful consideration, I have decided to retire from active politics. It has been an incredibly difficult journey, in especially that of navigating back-to-back election defeats, and I think it’s time to focus on what matters most: my family, who has supported me tirelessly through the ups and downs.

Politics is demanding, not only for those in the spotlight, but also for those close to them. My family has made countless sacrifices to support me, and now I want to devote my time and energy to them. This decision was not easy, but it seems necessary to me to really value the moments that I missed.

Although I may return to this trip one day, it is also possible that this will be a final goodbye to this chapter of my life. If so, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the SJB family, my constituents and all those who supported me in Weligama. Your trust and support mean the world to me, and I will always carry it in my heart,” he said in a post on X.

Jayawickreme failed to enter Parliament from Matara district in the general election.
