India’s maritime future: Sarbananda Sonowal outlines plans to improve port infrastructure and cargo handling – Infrastructure News

India is poised to become a global leader in the maritime sector by improving port infrastructure, increasing cargo handling capacity and building a strong shipbuilding and repair ecosystem, according to Minister of Ports, Shipping Navigation and Union Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.

Speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of Kamarajar Port in Chennai, Sonowal highlighted the country’s ambitious vision for the maritime industry. “By 2047, India will be among the top ten maritime nations,” he said. The minister praised Kamarajar Port for its role in decongesting Chennai Port and promoting efficient coal management, paving the way for future expansion.

Sonowal announced key projects including the construction of a 3 million tonne per annum (MTPA) capacity Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) jetty, which will further enhance the operational capabilities of the port. Additionally, a million liter per day (MLD) seawater desalination plant, to be constructed at a cost of Rs 32 crore, is expected to meet the drinking and domestic water needs of the port and neighboring coastal communities .

The minister also laid the foundation stone for two major initiatives: a capital dredging project and an integrated command and control center at Kamarajar port, with a combined investment of Rs 545 crore. These projects aim to enhance the efficiency and security of the port while promoting technological advancements in operations.

Sonowal highlighted the Ministry of Shipping’s emphasis on timely execution and quality of infrastructure projects, which he attributed to the accelerated completion of flagship programmes. He reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming India’s maritime sector into a global powerhouse.

Kamarajar Port, known for its strategic location and modern infrastructure, continues to play a vital role in India’s maritime growth, highlighting its importance in the country’s journey to becoming a leading maritime nation.
