The Perfect Winter Day on the New York Subway

The Perfect Winter Day on the New York Subway

Before leaving my apartment each morning, I check the weather on the New York subway. The weather site, with popular accounts on social networks, offers a simple rating of 1 out of 10 each day and a summary of the “moods” to expect. This has never failed me, thanks to John Homenuk’s diligent and “no panic” forecasting. Recently, I sat down with Homenuk, the meteorologist behind NYMW, to discuss the winter forecast in New York and whether we’ll have snow this holiday season.

What is a 10/10 winter day to you?

A 10/10 winter day is actually very hard to find I would say! While I like to be objective about grades, it’s really hard to imagine a perfect day during the winter months, given the tendency to be cold and windy. If I had to choose, however, I would say that a perfect winter day is one characterized by fresh snow (a good storm, not a small one) followed by afternoon sun on the new snowpack. I love every season, so if it’s winter, I want the whole thing. Bring me the blizzards!

What is the worst type of winter day?

Man, I feel like those days when it’s 30 or 40 and it’s raining are just the worst. Dull, dark, damp and wet. Raw.

What is your favorite winter activity in New York?

I really love enjoying a good coffee in a cafe on a cold day, it’s so comforting. Plus, red wine and an Italian meal on a cold day at one of the city’s many amazing spots (hello Lil Frankie’s, Bar Primi, and Altesi) sounds amazing right now.

What to do on a snowy day?

Usually, if it’s a snow day, I’m busy working! But if I can get out, I like to take a good walk in the snow. There is something so peaceful about it; it’s quiet, calm and beautiful, especially right after the snow stops.

Can you share with us an overview of your winter forecast?

If I had to use one word to describe it, it would be “volatile”. I think there will be periods of warm weather, but unlike recent winters, the first indication I’m getting is that we could have large temperature swings at times, and perhaps the possibility of a few larger winter storms. .. We’ll see!
