Qamrul, Menon, Inu and 3 others arrested in separate cases

Six people, including four former ministers Qamrul Islam, Lt Col (retd) Mohammad Faruk Khan, Rashed Khan Menon and Hasanul Haq Inu, were arrested today in four separate cases filed at different police stations in Dhaka .

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and sacked Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mashiur Rahman are also among the accused.

Qamrul was arrested in two cases filed with Kamrangirchar police station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order after two separate investigators submitted applications in this regard.

The first case, filed on September 7 this year, alleged that on June 2, 2020, individuals acting under the direction of Qamrul entered the offices of Ali Cable Network and extorted Tk 10 lakh.

The second case, filed on September 8, accused Qamrul of orchestrating an incident on September 24, 2023, in which accused individuals allegedly ransacked the home of a complainant and extorted Tk 20 lakh at gunpoint.

Faruk, Menon and Inu were arrested in connection with an attack on the motorcade of BNP President Khaleda Zia at Fakirapool intersection on April 20, 2015.

The case, filed on August 26 by Shahriar Imam Asip, publicity secretary of the BNP’s Motijheel Thana unit, names 47 people, including Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin and actors Zayed Khan, Shahriar Nazim Joy and Shazu Khadem.

The same court issued the order after investigator Md Shamim Al Mamun, sub-inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), presented them to the court with a request in this regard.

Meanwhile, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and Mashiur Rahman were arrested in a case relating to the death of Rakib Howlader, a 16-year-old factory worker who was shot dead during the anti-discrimination student movement in Chankharpool on August 5.

Rakib was taken to Mitford Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Her father filed a complaint on September 23 against 51 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Haji Mohammad Salim and others.
