A former school, cottage opposite a cemetery, land near Upton, historic house and former laser engineering center behind a Greggs could soon go up for sale. Wirral Council is looking to sell more land and buildings after a fire sale in 2023.

The local authority has now sold ten properties, including former Treasury buildings, a newsstand, a former school site and a number of other buildings, generating £5,562,000 for the local authority. The council also agreed terms for the sale of the Bromborough Civic Centre, a former Ministry of Defense site, and two other properties which will generate £7.7 million.

These sales would mean more than £13.2 million would be generated for the local authority, more than is needed to repay a government loan for emergency financial support. However, five more properties could be added to the mix, according to a report by the policy and resources committee.

These are the Conway Centre, Conway Street, Birkenhead, Ivy Farm Cottage near Arrowe Park and Landican Cemetery, Pennant House in Bebington village, land near Upton Bypass and the former center of laser engineering in Birkenhead.

The Conway Center is opposite Birkenhead Bus Station. According to a case study by ORB Rope Access which removed plants from the building, it was built in 1903 and has been a school, hotel, education center, offices and police station.

The laser engineering center located off Campbeltown Road was put up for sale in 2021. The idea was to sell it to Quinnovations, but they were unable to complete the purchase.

Over time the building has been reassessed and councilors are asked to resubmit it to Quinnovations. However, if they cannot buy it “on time”, the leaders ask to “be authorized to proceed with a sale on the open market under the best possible conditions” at a committee meeting on December 11.

Two properties are also currently on the market, including the former Eastham Youth Center which could become new residences. The land off Ditton Lane in Moreton has been described as a “residential development opportunity”. The land is “former pastureland which is now characterized by areas of washes, self-seeded grasses, shrubs and trees”.

A number of properties are set to be auctioned, including the former Seacombe Library and Plymyard Cemetery Lodge in Bromborough. The council is also preparing to sell the Hamilton Building, a former school, although how it will do so has not yet been decided.

Discussions are underway with a local sports club to take over the former Clare Mount specialist sports college which the council put up for sale last year. It will also look to sell the Marine Technology Park on Vanguard Way, the Wirral Business Center on Dock Road, as well as the Coronation Gardens Cafe, subject to the sorting of current leases.

The council could also consider selling a plot of land near Old Clatterbridge Road in Bebington for £10,000 less than the market price. In fact, councilors agreed to offer the land to neighbors, including Claremont Farm.

It was valued at £45,000, but the people next door could only scrape together £35,000. Advisors are recommended to sell it at this price.

The former Bebington Town Hall as well as the former council offices on Seaview Road in Liscard could move forward with development. Councilors are being asked to give the green light to an approved development partner for both sites.
