A visit with Santa doesn’t have to be an overwhelming experience – Scranton Times-Tribune

MAYFIELD — A calmer, more approachable Santa is coming to town, offering people with disabilities a chance to create a memory with the jolly old elf.

Directions LLC is sponsoring a “Silent Santa” event for the third year, with the goal of providing a holiday experience for everyone, without overwhelming the senses.

A free event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 15 at the company’s office located at 1309 Route 6 in Mayfield.

Owner Jill West said families enjoy the opportunity to visit and take a photo with Santa because such events are often too loud and distracting in a traditional setting.

Participants are encouraged to include their family members in their special photo.

Something as simple as a photo can set the stage for a more complete holiday season, West said.

During the first year, a mother turned to West and said, “This will be the first vacation photo we’ll have.” THANKS.”

The event is open to all ages, with the age range described as “kids with disabilities and kids at heart.”

It is also reassuring for participants to know that Santa and his helpers are trained professionals who work within the agency and have all the required authorizations.

The event includes low lighting and a quiet setting. Participants are free to interact with Santa in any way that suits them best.

Tours last 10-15 minutes and require registration, to ensure families arrive one at a time and maintain a calm environment.

“It was something that was missing in our area,” West said. “Everyone should have the chance to meet Santa.”

Participants are encouraged to fill out a letter for Santa during their visit or even bring one with them.

“We’ll make sure it reaches the North Pole in time for Christmas,” West said.
