Leicester City defender Caleb Okoli has expressed his disappointment over his failure to make his debut for the Italian national team despite switching international allegiance.

The 23-year-old, eligible to play for both Nigeria and Italy, opted to represent the Azzurri despite strong interest from the Nigerian camp.

What initially seemed like a defining moment in the former Atalanta star’s career – receiving a call-up to the national team – has since turned into a lingering source of regret, as Okoli remains uncapped despite his late August call-up .

In a recent interview, the combative central defender shared his frustrations over his lack of playing time, even after being included in the squad for several international matches.

Okoli talks about his national team’s regrets

In an interview with Italian media outlet Cronache di Spogliatoio, the former Atalanta star shared his feelings on his national team journey so far, reflecting on a mixture of hope and regret.

“I had some great rallies and the only regret I have is not being able to make my debut,” admitted Okoli.

“However, I believe that being part of this journey is also important, and I am sure that in the future I will be able to make my debut.”

While Okoli’s words contain a mix of optimism and subtle regret, his chances of making his debut for the Italian team look increasingly slim. His situation at Leicester City worsened following the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy as head coach.

According to FotMob, the defender, who made nine Premier League appearances before the Dutch tactician’s arrival, is yet to play a single minute since Van Nistelrooy took charge, signaling a significant decline in his position within the the team.

Okoli is not the first eligible player in Nigeria to express regret over passing up the opportunity to represent the Super Eagles. Such sentiments have been echoed by others at different points in their careers.
