Indonesia pledges $30 million to support Gavi’s global vaccination efforts for 2026-2030

Indonesia pledges million to support Gavi’s global vaccination efforts for 2026-2030

The Republic of Indonesia has pledged $30 million to support Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, in its global immunization efforts for the period 2026-2030, known as “Gavi 6.0”.

This commitment marks Indonesia’s debut as a donor to Gavi and the first-ever commitment from a middle-income country to Gavi’s replenishment efforts for its next strategic phase.

Gavi highlighted that Indonesia’s commitment demonstrates the effectiveness of the Alliance’s focus on partnering with countries to build self-sustaining vaccination systems.

The contribution also highlights Indonesia’s leadership in global health and its championing of the critical role vaccines play in building healthier, safer and more prosperous communities around the world.

Indonesia’s journey with Gavi: from partner to donor

The story of vaccination in Indonesia is one of transformation and progress. During the 22 years of partnership with Gavi, the country has doubled the number of vaccines offered as part of its routine immunization programme, reduced child mortality by four and completed all stages of Gavi support.

Now independently pursuing its vaccination efforts, Indonesia continues to receive targeted support to ensure equitable access to high-impact vaccines, through Gavi’s flexible approach to partnering with middle-income countries.

The country’s evolution to becoming a Gavi donor shows the impact that sustained investment in health can have on a country’s future.

Global health leadership and advocacy

Professor José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Gavi Board of Directors, said we welcome this commitment with deep gratitude, as well as Indonesia’s continued commitment to championing the vital importance of vaccination to building a world healthier, safer and more equitable.

Indonesia’s extraordinary journey with Gavi highlights how sustainable investments in vaccines can transform lives, health systems and countries.” he said.

Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, highlighted that Indonesia’s contribution demonstrates the long-term impact of Gavi’s model and the strength of its partnerships.

As a country that has achieved remarkable successes thanks to Gavi’s support, Indonesia is now paying it forward, ensuring that other countries can benefit from the same life-saving interventions,” she said.

Gavi’s impact and future goals

Gavi announced that it has vaccinated more than 1.1 billion children since its inception, saving more than 18 million lives and halving child mortality in the low-income countries where it operates.

  • The Alliance also forms the cornerstone of global health security, enabling countries to effectively prevent and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.
  • Looking ahead, Gavi aims to raise at least $9 billion for its next strategic period (2026-2030). The funds will be used to protect approximately 500 million children and save an additional 8 to 9 million lives.
  • These initiatives are expected to generate more than $100 billion in economic benefits for participating countries and generate $4 billion in co-financing for vaccination programs, further strengthening health systems globally.
  • Indonesia’s pledge comes just a day after the European Union and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced plans to co-host a high-level pledging meeting to support Gavi’s replenishment efforts for Gavi 6.0.

The event, which will take place in Brussels in early 2025, will bring together leaders from governments, partner organizations, vaccine manufacturers, civil society and the private sector.

What you need to know

Gavi 6.0 is the new strategic phase of the Vaccine Alliance for the period 2026-2030, with ambitious goals and a clear strategy to continue and expand its global impact.

  • A key strategy is to build stronger and more resilient health systems. Gavi 6.0 will focus on improving health infrastructure to ensure countries can effectively deliver immunization services and respond to health crises, such as epidemics and pandemics.
  • Gavi aims to vaccinate at least 500 million children over the period 2026-2030, ensuring that these children receive life-saving vaccines that can prevent deadly diseases.
  • The Alliance aims to save an additional 8 to 9 million lives by expanding access to vaccines, particularly in low-income countries where vaccination coverage has been historically insufficient.

A key goal is to reduce child mortality by increasing vaccination rates globally, particularly in the most vulnerable communities in fragile and low-income countries.
