TL;DR

  • Google is working on a feature called Motion Cues to help combat motion sickness.
  • The feature will display animated dots on the screen to mimic vehicle movement.
  • We managed to enable the feature to give you a preview before its release.

A Teardown of the APK helps predict features that might come to a service in the future based on current work code. However, these planned features may not be available in a public release.

We managed to enable the upcoming Motion Cues feature with the latest Google Play Services beta v24.29.32, indicating that it is closer to completion.

If and when the feature rolls out to users, it will need the Show permission on the app to work. Users will be able to enable the feature via a Quick Settings tile. As you can see, the Motion Cues feature will also allow you to choose whether you want it to be automatically activated when “driving” is detected.

Here’s a demo of the feature in action:

As you can see, when Motion Cues is enabled, animated black dots appear at the edge of the screen. These points will mimic the direction your vehicle is traveling. This helps reduce the sensory conflict between what you see with your eyes and the movement your brain senses through your inner ears without massively disrupting the reading or viewing experience.

This feature is currently not available in Play Services. We don’t know when it will be made available to users or if it ever will be, but given the state of completion, there’s a good chance it will be soon.
